[Note: This plea is not directed to non-RedHat, non-Cygnus gcc volunteers.]
I have made the big mistake of upgrading my systems to RedHat 7.0.
I would like not to enter the question of whether or not it was a good
idea for RedHat to ship with a GCC version not released by the GCC team.
What matters to me is what can be done to mitigate the problems this
decision has caused.
Here is my personal situation (reading the mailing lists archives
it seems others are having similar problems).
The compiler shipped with RH7 cannot compile the C++ application
on which my colleagues and myself are working.
One of the problems has been filed using the GNAT system (#687).
Going forward does not help right now, since the 281000 snapshot
has even more problems than the RH7 version.
Going backward also does not help, since RH7 GCC cannot compile
the good old 2.95.2. Someone suggested (on a GCC list) a set of
patches that should be "backported" to GCC 2.95.2. However, he was
not sure that the links to the patches where the correct ones.
Moreover, I am not qualified to select patches and backport them
(whatever this means) to 2.95.2.
Uninstalling RH7 and going back to RH6.2 is not an option.
In summary, we are stuck. I really hope something can be done
about this. If RedHat has made its decision with the help of
some GCC gurus, the same persons can probably prepare a set of
RPMs for GCC 2.95.2 + patches that can run on RH7 systems.
As far as I can tell, this seems to be the simplest solution.
However, I have no doubts on the fact that something ought
to be done.
All the best,
Roberto
P.S. Yes, I have also tried `kgcc' on RH7 without success.
P.P.S. If you think that this message should have been sent
elsewhere I beg your pardon. What made me think it
was appropriate for this list is the knowledge that
Cygnus employs several GCC developers. Reading
"Cygnus, a RedHat Company" a few hundreds times
allowed for the additional inference ;)
