I don't think anybody compiles with 2.7.2.3 any longer.

egcs-2.91.66 (egcs-1.1.2 release) is now the compiler of choice for
building linux kernels.
gcc-2.95.2 generally works on the later 2.2.x series and on the later 2.3.x
and 2.4.0-test kernels, but there's no guarantee. YMMV
