Thanks for the clarification. I didn't expect such a flurry of discussion.
I was motivated to write, and to continue submitting testcases that aren't
fixed, by my recent case g77.f-torture/compile/200005018.f, which was only
apparent on i686-pc-linux-gnu. Shortly after it was submitted it detected
an bug in new work in the backend.
