I have binutils 2.9.1 in the src tree with gcc. Anything I am being
negligent about?

You mean trying to use it without binutils as more than a temporary
measure?

Sure, but the building problems aren't likely to be any different. Is that
an extremely old version of binutils? People normally use 2.9.1 or a newer
snapshot; you must be aware that the instructions specify 2.8.1 or newer.
