Couldn't you do that by making the tag on the branch itself, using "cvs tag"
instead of "cvs rtag"?
cvs checkout -r g77-0_6-branch egcs
cd egcs
cvs tag g77-0_6-branchpoint
As far as I could see, CVS will tag the same revisions as with the method you
described.
