Possible regression: egcs-1.1a - mips-sgi-irix6.2 - octave-2.0.13

I have a possible regression in egcs-1.1a.  Octave users take care - and run
the testsuite.

I have just built, checked and installed egcs-1.1a on mips-sgi-irix6.2
The test results for egcs-1.1a were ok - same as the prerelease and the last
few snapshots.

I then built octave-2.0.13, run its tests and found some failures.
I last built octave with egcs-19980803 snapshot, and this was OK. 

I probably won't be able to follow up until next week.  I hope this is
better than nothing.
