That sounds like a perfectly reasonable compromise.

Here's the patch rediffed against the gcc-4.5 branch. It passes bootstrap. OK to apply to the 4.5 branch only?

In case anyone is interested, the conclusion of this discussion (which happened on #gcc) was that it is anyway too late for this patch to go into gcc-4.5.0. I will try to fix the plugin so it doesn't need this patch. If I don't succeed before it's time to spin off gcc-4.5.1, then the possibility of applying the patch to gcc-4.5.1 can be considered at that time.
