instead of sending repeated pings, how about a quick search of the
gcc-patches archives? That revealed this thread

I haven't tested the latest patch in the thread yet, but the lack of
timeout support in ACATS currently makes a mess of Tru64 UNIX testing where
many tests have to be killed manually for the testing to conclude ;-(
