Also regression-tested on i686-pc-linux-gnu. OK for 4.4. As formatted
streams doesn't appear to be highly used, I'd say this is not for 4.3.
I'll also check our test cases and see if we have a test for not
truncating on unformatted stream. If we don't, I'll commit one.
