You probably should explain why this change is necessary, which is
that when built for darwin, gcc doesn't define __powerpc64__.  Also,
the simpler change of substituting #ifndef __LP64__ for
#ifndef __powerpc64__ should be sufficient.  (I tested that this is
indeed the case for powerpc-linux and powerpc64-linux.)
