It was wedded to the GCC build machinery and so it didn't work initially as a standalone programme. However, Richard Guenther (AFAICT) patched it to make it work and the last I tried, it configured, installed and built rather painlessly on an i686-pc-linux box.

Agreed. Everything else is an interim solution till we get around to doing this.
