to make it clearer for the reviewers - in this link there's a patch that
addresses Steve's warnings - "tests.april28", an then most of the mail is a
discussion on how the tests can be further modified to address the problem
of pointers to types whose alignment is bigger than their size (items a,b,c
in the mail). To speed up the review, this discussion can be ignored for
now (I can send these additional fixes separately later on) so as to not
hold up Steve's patch (the "tests.april28" patch does not depend on these
additional fixes).
