Your patch will not cause incorrect code to be generated. However as I'm
not sure yet what the real bug is, I cannot say whether there might be some
other problems lurking until it is properly fixed ...

I could not reproduce the ICE using ./cc1 -O2 -fprofile-generate with
GNU C version 4.0.0 20050218 (experimental) (s390-ibm-linux).
Could you elaborate with options and compiler version you're using?
(P.S.: I'm currently traveling, and may not be able to look into the
problem any further until Monday ...)
