I think it might be useful to have this announced more broadly, to help
our users porting from 2.95.
If your concern is that the contribution, from the amount of technical
work involved, is not significant enough, we could add the announcemente
without mentioning who contributed this feature.

This looks fine. Concerning the issue Andreas raised, let's follow his
suggestion. (I know that you just copied existing behavior.)
