What I'm worried about is that some pass will synthesize an HFmode
arithmetic pattern, fail to recognize it, and abort rather than trying
something else.

movhf patterns will certainly be necessary in addition to extendhf?f,
and somewhere there will need to be a definition of what
floating-point constants can be produced this way.
