It's always been the case, and such a patch was shot down before on
the grounds that it was expected behavior to be unable to build the
C++ front end with other compilers, precisely because of the
cast-as-lvalue extension.

Sorry.  If I had the time, I'd rather help with 3.4 than 3.3.
