It definitely used to work, but was a pain to maintain.  For instance,
the SGI tools don't accept *.S files so they had to be renamed to *.s at
configure time.

libffi is used by a number of projects but I am no longer intererested
in maintaining support for non-GNU compilers.  I don't think this will
impact anyone.
