Hmm, I didn't really ask for a review before because I don't think my patch
is necessarily the "correct" fix. My intention was to point out what seemed
like an inconsistency in the assumptions made in different parts of the
compiler, and let more experienced developers decide what the proper fix
should be. Anyway, I'll kindly ask that someone with the time to review:
