I think this is overall a good idea. Execpt maybe, that the default base
is the basename without suffix, also for dumps. Guess what happens,
if you have foo.c and foo,cpp, and want to procude dumps for both. Or
more likely foo.c and foo.i. I think, the suffix should be included.
