template <int I> void f () {}
void g () { f<__alignof__ (S)> (); }
will do it in two small lines in C++. The mangled name of the
template instantiation will be different. Yes, I have code that does
this, by the way...

That sounds reasonable.
Please change it back, and then propose a way to get the other behavior.
