There is, however, a requirement that there be some way to adjust
the *maximum* permitted alignment.
I don't follow. What do you mean by that term?
I think your change was well-meaning, but clashes with existing
documented practice,
I don't believe we ever documented anywhere what default alignment we
gave to packed records.
Please revert the change in the meantime.
The change does more change the default, so the right approach would be
to restore the default, if we're really sure we want it, for C and C++.
