While it takes longer to *generate* configure, i've noticed the
configure script it generates is significantly faster.
It's easily twice as fast at generating the headers and Makefiles as
the old configure.

So i'd rather see a 20x performance lose for the person who has to run
autoconf every couple months, if we get a 2x performance win for the
people compiling gcc.
