If you checked in a patch, you must have understood how *something*
should have worked differently than how it did. It would have been
nice to document that something.
Well, it really was a kludge: in this particular case, those modifiers
were doing the wrong things. But I am not at all sure that we are
using them in a consistent fashion. The current documentation is
probably the best we can do until that whole area is regularized, which
is on my list, but not near the top, unfortunately.
