Relative to the 4.3BSD make, this "more recent version of BSD-make" is *not* a
"more recent version", it's a completely different program. The 4.3BSD make is
the original UNIX make by Fletcher. To my knowledge, my ancestors have made
only one concession to SysV in make, and that is limited support for VPATH. And
no, I cannot replace any original UNIX components with reimplementations in
4.3BSD. But I have no problem using them myself when working on projects where
I have to, like GNU.
