I think the last time it was posted, Dave wondered (to me, at least) why
the underlying system (cygwin?) didn't implement the UNIXy routines,
and I didn't have an answer, or feel I had the time to pursue it.
But, looking at what you're doing, it seems like you're catering to
more platforms (on top of Windows `??') than just one.
