  Ick.  You're right, of course, but it's really uglier than I'd hoped
to find.  Hmm.  Ponderances abound.

  The gcc that ships with BSD/OS 4.0 simply invokes "ld" as it's
linker.  I'd assumed it wasn't hacked to do that, and that that was a
normal behaviour.  You're saying it's not possible to configure egcs
(ala collect2) to do this?  It seems not an unreasonable thing to add
as an option...
