  Blah.  I just bothered to look a little more carefully at the copy
of egcs_ss_19990228 that I checked out, and it's easy to see what to
do.  It's just that 1.1.1 didn't have such a mechanism.  I can just
#def DEFAULT_LINKER to "ld" and it should work just fine.

  I can't immagine that would be an "improper" thing to do, but please
let me know if it sounds reasonable to you as well...  As long as that
symbol wasn't intended for some drastically different purpose, I
expect it'll probabaly be the right solution.
