Thanks!  But, just looking at it, it seems only the last patchlet actually
fixes the bug, while the others probably make for better run-time
diagnostics, right?

(It's interesting to see that direct formatted I/O is, indeed,
supported by libf2c!  I had considered that it might not be, and
was about to investigate the problem this afternoon.  So, thanks
for finding the problem for me!  I think it might be worthwhile
for me to make similar fix-ups to improve diagnostics, though, where
they seem worthwhile.)
