gcc libraries paths

I would like to know how to find the 'search path' when 'gcc' is compiling /
linking and running. It appears that 'runtime' linking is at a different
location than the 'compile and/or linking' libraries are located. I guess
my need is to learn how to locate the 'path' that is searched when 1.0
Compiling 2.0 Linking and finally 3.0 Runtime. Thanks for any help in this
matter.
