dwarf vs dwarf-2

I am curious, under gcc-3.2.1 do I need to use dwarf2 or can I get away with
just using dwarf? The reason I ask, is that gdb53 is giving funky results
in comparison to using gdb from 1999 (forgot the version number). In
particular inlines marcos are giving funky pointer values. Could someone
shed some light on dwarf vs dwarf2?
