problems getting debugging symbols using gcc on sparc solaris 8

- Subject: problems getting debugging symbols using gcc on sparc solaris 8
gcc version 2.95.3 20010315
sun4u sparc SUNW,Ultra-250
solaris 8
all packages from sunfreeware.com
Compile with the following
cc -g -I ... -c etc...
cc -s -g -o ... ...
run gdb (version 5.1) on the binary and I get
(no debugging symbols found)...
If I compile directly with no intermediate stage
cc -g -o ... ...
I get symbols
Is this something to do with the libraries I am linking with (the compile is
fairly complex and involves the oracle precompiler)
