You might get away with compiling newlib for your platform
(http://sources.redhat.com/newlib/) but I doubt it. You would do much
better to install the OS packages.

Why not? If you don't have it, you can download an .iso image from Sun's
website for free. I doubt you'll find the package available on its own.
