I had exactly the same bug when attempting to build gcc-4.0.1 and gcc-4.0.2 on
Mac OSX 10.4.3 (Mac Mini, 512 MB memory).  I used
cd build
../gcc-4.0.2/configure --with-cpu=7450 --with-float=hard --disable-nls
...
make bootstrap.

Changing to
../gcc-4.0.2/configure --disable-nls
appears to have solved the problem.
