It's all in the PR. My initial bug report has links to the original patch that broke the bootstrap back in 2002, my initial report and an analysis of the problem by Geoff.

Andrew Pinski has spent quite a bit of time on fixing the bug,
for which many thanks. He has sent many pings and I have done too.
Finally, the required patches are now on mainline, and I thought
you were the person to approve patches for 3.4.x.
