Andrew, I think your test case can be simplified further
(I ran into this while reducing the testcase for bug 11162
as seen by gcc-3.4-20030903):
int foo(char *p1)
{
return bar(p1);
}
Here's what I see when I compile it:
$ /usr/gcc-3.4-20030903-glibc-2.3.2/bin/sh4-unknown-linux-gnu-gcc -O2 -fnew-ra
z.c
z.c: In function `foo':
z.c:4: error: Abnormal edges for no purpose in bb 0
z.c:4: internal compiler error: verify_flow_info failed
