Are you suggesting that I just need to downgrade autoconf and it will work ? I
find this surprising, as I've just removed autoconf (renamed it to autoconfXXX)
and re-run 'configure'. gcc-3.0.3 configures okay, without the presence of a
working autoconf. I've not tried to build gcc again, as it is not a quick thing
to do. But I'm a little suspicious that the version number of an unused
programme, can be of any relevance.

To the best of my knowledge, none of the tools I'm using to build gcc, required
autoconf to be present.

I'm happy to do this, but it takes the best part of an hour to bootstrap it (ie
3 stages).
