Thanks for all the replies. Before reading them, I'd already tried
using last night's 3.0 CVS to build glibc-2.2.3 (with default
flags)--it builds properly, but generates lots of failures in make
check.
For now, I've reinstalled a glibc-2.2.3 built with gcc-2.95.3; this is
a pity, since the fixed ix86 stack-alignment in 3.0 will not work.
I'll wait until 2.2.4 comes out.
I'll report the results of my bootstrap/testsuit runs later tonight.
