[This is in response to details remarks from Jim Wilson
<wilson@cygnus.com> on Mon, 30 Apr 2001 19:17:26 -0700]:
Thanks for your comments on the g++ (version 2.9-ia64-000216) issues.
I'd read the 2.96 comments at http://gcc.gnu.org/gcc-2.96.html quite
some ago, and knew about the code incompatibilities of the 2.96
development branch.
I'm in communication with SGI and HP on these problems. Neither
gcc-2.95.2, nor 2.95.3, nor 3.0-20010423 will build the SGI Pro64
compilers on IA-64, so I cannot rebuild them to apply bug fixes.
Neither g++-2.9-ia64-000216 nor sgiCC-0.01.0-13 will build James
Clark's SGML parser, SP, nor GNU troff (also originally written by
James Clark); both compilers get fatal assertion errors, but on
different .cxx files. Attempts to compile those files with the other
compiler later result in link failures.
I've been making build attempts for the weekly gcc-3.0 development
snapshots on 10 architectures; it fails to build on 7 of them, and of
the 3 where builds succeed, builds have failed for the last 3 weeks on
SGI IRIX 6.5.
Eventually, all of these problems will get worked out. In the
meantime, I'll continue my software build efforts on HP NUE IA-64,
since that helps my department get ready for real IA-64 hardware, as
well as providing a steady stream of bug reports to the emulator and
compiler developers to help them identify and fix problems.
