Perhaps you were cooking with GAS, and I wasn't?  I have most of the
GNU tools installed, including  GNU make and gawk, but not binutils
(only native linker and assembler).

I'm sorry I can't promise to debug gcc - I already have my own
amazingly buggy free software program to fix.
