Another data point, and then I'm giving up on trying to solve this:
The compiler cannot bootstrap (sparc-sun-solaris2.8) due to the missing
builtins, but 2.95.2 can be used to build current CVS. That's probably
obvious to the experts, but it's a useful reminder for the rest of us.
