This is NOT my day for sending mail. Apologies to those who are gonna get this
twice. :/

Ok. What the subject says basically :) they work fine with egcs 1.1.2 (just
tried it) but with gcc 2.95 they bail, nice and confused. I thought it might
be binutils 2.9.5.0.3 but when I uninstalled that thins still failed to work;
only changing gcc2.95 to egcs 1.1.2 helped.
I'm trying this on an i686 with glibc 2.1.1.
Is this a bug with gcc or binutils and xterm?
binutils:
./configure --prefix=/usr --enable-shared
Config.guess failed to determine the host type. You need to specify one.
Usage: configure [OPTIONS] [HOST]
xterm:
./configure --prefix=/usr
loading cache ./config.cache
checking host system type... configure: error: can not guess host type; you must specify one
