compile time through roof!

I'm using EGCS

version: egcs-2.93.21 19990502 (snapshot)
system: Linux i686 400MHz, RedHat 5.2

and experienced "quite a high" compile time for a small but
template intensive piece of code (CXX-extension to Python). I wondered if this
is something we will have to learn to live with if one's wanting to use a
sophisticated language such as C++ or is this merely a transient state on the
part of the egcs development process?

The example code file is attached. Just do

                 tar xzvf cxx.tgz
                 cd CXX
                 make

A Time.log file shows the several compilation times.

Thanks,

Henk Jansen
