VPATH implementations vary pretty wildly. Any test we do with VPATH
runs the risk of getting a false positive.
I agree that we ought to have a check in the toplevel make/configure
mechanisms.
In fact, you'll note that gcc's configure code was recently changed
to warn about bogon environment variables that cause bootstrap failures.
(most of the code stolen from glibc :-)
