Just to be clear, you use "-g -O3 -funroll-all-loops -mminimal-toc"
and pass "make compare"?

I'm sorry I was unclear in saying this, I don't know exactly
which snapshot it started to break. Its certainly not the fault of
the most recent changes. I previously reported this mid-July.

But sometime prior to that and certainly in gcc-2.8.1 and
egcs-1.0.3 it worked.
