Isn't It Romantic

Valentine’s Day has come and gone, but you can still celebrate
literary love with these couples whose love can keep you warm through the
rest of this long, cold winter.

Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet - Pride and Prejudice

Is there a more classic love story? Terrible missteps, false impressions,
scamming young men, and jealous young women- this one has it all! Romance
writers have tried for centuries to match the cleverness of Jane
Austen’s sharp eye for society and swoon-worthy characters.

Ron and Hermione - Harry Potter Series

That’s right- fight me. While they have their detractors, this odd
couple is perhaps one of the more realistic in literature. Many of us know
the smart, organized Type A who is married to the loveable and goofy free
spirit. They strike a balance that makes you really believe they will
weather anything that happens for the rest of their lives.

Jamie and Claire - Outlander Series

For today’s readers the only couple more classic than Mr. Darcy and
Elizabeth- Jamie and Claire. Their love has spanned centuries and
continents. Even thousands of pages already literally in the books, eager
readers still want to read more about their love story.

Armand and Reine Marie Gamache - Three Pines Mysteries

Detective, philosopher, and hero archetype Armand Gamache is the thinking
woman’s version of Sam Spade. By his side, though never in his shadow,
is Reine Marie. She is patient and wise and the backbone of not just their
relationship, but eventually of the entire town of Three Pines. Their life
is often idyllic, even with the frequently high levels of danger they
encounter.

Beatrice and Benedict - Much Ado About Nothing

Shakespeare gave us many memorable couples, but Beatrice and Benedict stand
apart. They are the blueprint for every love-hate relationship in fiction
and why we love those relationships. Their fiery exchanges and witty barbs
lead to an inevitable declaration of love that would likely withstand the
test of time.

Therese and Carol - The Price of Salt

Patricia Highsmith created a couple unlike any other in recent literary
history. While their path was not at all easy as a lesbian couple in the
1950s, the fact they were given a happy ending together broke the mold. In
a time when same sex couples have only recently been more prominently
featured, Therese and Carol were a rare fictional couple for anyone looking
for LGBQT+ representation.

Shadow and Laura - American Gods

In Neil Gaiman’s fantasy tribute to America’s roots, one would
not expect to find a couple worthy of this list. And in many ways, Shadow
and Laura are not. After dying while cheating on Shadow, Laura is
mysteriously resurrected from the dead and has only one mission- to protect
her husband. He has a lot on his plate even without his sorta zombie wife
popping up, so their reunions are not sweet and tender by any stretch of
the imagination. Still, the understanding they reach about themselves and
their relationship in the middle of a world in chaos might be a perfect
example of a post-modern love.
