Talking Books, Again
By Amy Shamroe

“There are few finer or more innocent pleasures than talking books to
one who knows.” - A. Edward Newton

A few months ago we shared a few podcasts that connect readers to authors,
share reviews, and even general book discussions. As was mentioned at the
time, there is a litany of other book related podcasts- including books
focused on just one author or series. Here are a few worth checking out.

Harry Potter and the Sacred Text- Hosted by Vanessa Zoltan and Casper ter
Kuile

www.harrypottersacredtext.com [http://www.harrypottersacredtext.com]

Self described as, “It’s the English class you didn't know you
missed and the meaningful conversations you didn't know you craved.”
Vanessa (Research Assistant at Harvard Divinity School) and Casper
(Ministry Innovation Fellow at Harvard Divinity School) are working their
way through the Harry Potter series, chapter by chapter, focusing on the
text to discuss larger philosophical issues. For example,
“Desperation: Flight of the Fat Lady” examines the larger idea of
human reactions to desperation through the lens of the eighth chapter of
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. While these episodes are family
friendly, the philosophical discussion that accompany them can be academic,
so young ones might not follow as well. It is also for this reason that
Harry Potter and the Sacred Text comes a little more highly recommended
than other Potter podcasts.

The Losers’ Club- Dan Caffrey, Randall Colburn, Justin Gerber,
McKenzie Gerber, Allison Shoemaker, Mel Kassel, and Editor-in-Chief Michael
Roffman (from Consequence of Sound)

Home to all things Stephen King, The Losers’ Club gets into
King’s books and the various adaptations of this works. The hosts go
beyond discussing plot (or casting) and dig for the themes and context in
each of his works. They also look at King’s work in the larger scope
of popular culture, which can sometimes be overlooked when looking at his
prolific output. While made by those who might be considered
“superfans,” the podcast is still very accessible to people new
to King’s oeuvre.

The Blume Saloon- Alison and Jody

https://theblumesaloon.com/ [https://theblumesaloon.com/]

Joining two grown women to discuss the works of Judy Blume might seem odd
to some, but The Blume Saloon is like book club with your most raucous
members. The discussion can get a little off track so it is bound to go
anywhere. Still, these ladies will discuss Blubber with as much enthusiasm
as Wifey. Rediscover the classics that took you from childhood, through
young adult, and even into more scandalous “smut” And if you
didn’t know Judy Blume ventured into scandalous books with taboo
topics like sex and weed, let Alison and Jody be your guides.
