Thanks Jonathan. That means that I was building with gcc 4.1.3 but experiencing the new behaviour of libstdc++ 4.4. I am hoping for some help from the Ubuntu forum to explain this.

Anyway, the code change fixes the problem.  Thanks for your patience and help.
