Yep. I think this is the current best answer. I'm using whatever
automake-2.57 that comes with Fedora.

Maybe we should just put up blessed versions in an autotools directory
on the ftp site. I think that's the only way we're ever going to get
everything in sync.

That, of course, would require us to make a decison....
