Should I be surprised that mainline "make bootstrap" fails on 
Linux x86-64 with 

  /usr/bin/ld: cannot open crti.o: No such file or directory"

?  Do I need to set a configure option I'm missing?
Of course there's nothing about it on the gcc list.
