IMHO the timing bits in bench++ are similar, but better. I think bench++
has the right idea for measuring performance.
But yes, this kind of thing needs to get done, and should be put into
testsuite_hooks or something.
Regarding adding this, I think somebody should ask Bjarne (Gaby, can you
do this?) It can get checked in as-is if he consents. If it's to be
copyright FSF he'll need to do an assignment. My thought would be to
just check it in as, is, without license or copyright info so we don't
have to deal.
